Working with a company whose business is the delivery of vehicles across the UK using freelance trade-plate drivers, we took sole responsibility for requirements analysis, system design, development and implementation of a tool to replace their manual, Excel-based spreadsheets. Interfacing to an existing provider of mobile data units for the drivers, the new system manages all aspects of entering jobs, allocating to drivers and updating the mobile units, and tracking progress of active jobs. The system incorporates links to Google for real-time calculation of mileages (used in pricing formulae), and makes extensive use of AJAX techniques to assist with accurate,

consistent job details completion.
Existing customer, job and driver data was imported to the MySql-based system and all processing switched over one weekend to the new system. Jobs are now entered faster and with much greater accuracy, there is no need for the manual uploads of data to the mobile units, management data is always up-to-date, costs and prices are calculated more accurately, and the system is available remotely to managers. The application features built-in auditing of all updates with easy-to-use audit trails.
Other ease-of-use features include 1-click layout alternatives, automatic drop-down menus giving direct access to jobs/drivers/customers recently updated by the user, wild-card search tools, consistent and helpful pop-up confirmation and warning messages.
